Shekinah Smith was born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago and, at the age of 11, her family immigrated to the United States. After two years in New York, her family settled in North Carolina.
Shekinah attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington and double majored in Film Studies and Communication Studies. During her freshman year, she joined the on-campus news broadcast club, TealTV. This position later lead Shekinah to become the Production Assistant for the Housing and Residence Life department, where for two years, she was responsible for all the department’s promotional and educational videos for the university’s website and closed circuit TV station, CHWK. In addition, Shekinah helped create the Caribbean Student Association and was inducted as a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
After two years of working as a Family Room Specialist at Apple's Genius Bar, she realized that she wanted to mix her love for technology with her creative side. This lead to her applying to graduate school. Shekinah is currently enrolled in Elon University's 10-month Interactive Media Graduate program. Over the course of one year, she went from not knowing what a "div" was to being able to build a site from scratch. She also has been able to learn more about design, user interface principles and research topics related to the technologies and theories related to our ever changing social world.
